Are you organising a party with friends? Or are you looking for a simple, new idea to add to your catering offer? Popcorn could be the answer. How should you prepare it? What are the different types of popcorn?

Essential ingredients for popcorn

To prepare popcorn, you will really only need corn kernels. Most people will prefer popcorn with butter or another fat, which enhances its flavour, and they will so add some salt. However, there are many types of popcorn, and different people will have different preferences.

Butter popcorn

The most popular type is butter popcorn – preparing it this way gives it a mild and pleasant taste. But remember to use clarified butter, which is suitable for melting – ordinary butter will burn too quickly, which will not only affect the taste, but also lead to the formation of harmful carcinogenic compounds. The easiest way to prepare popcorn with clarified butter is in a pot or pan.

Making popcorn without fat

Butter, popcorn and a pinch of salt are the perfect combination for many people. However, if you are trying to stay in shape and avoid high-calorie food, does that mean you should give up popcorn? No, because it can actually be a very light snack if prepared without the addition of fat. How is it prepared?

The easiest option is using a popcorn maker that will do all the work for you. Preparation in a popcorn maker will take no time and you will avoid wasting grains that burn or simply do not pop when prepared using home methods. This method can also be used to make popcorn without adding any fat, and then for fans of butter popcorn you can add melted butter to the ready-made snack.

Home popcorn makers, unlike those for commercial use, are small and intended for the preparation of small amounts of popcorn.

Caramel popcorn

To make caramel popcorn, prepare both the ingredients separately. First prepare the popcorn and then put it aside. Then prepare the caramel – dissolve cane sugar with butter in a pot. Stir until you achieve a smooth mass and add a little baking soda. Thoroughly pour the mixture over the popcorn, toss it together and wait for it to solidify. Prepared this way it will satisfy all those with a sweet tooth.

Cheese popcorn

Do you like to add cheese to everything you eat? If so, then cheese popcorn could be the perfect snack for you! The most important thing here is the right choice of cheese – it should be a hard cheese that will not clump when it comes into contact with the popcorn, but thoroughly cover and coat each piece of popcorn. Parmesan or Grana Padano will be best here.

What about vegan cheese popcorn? Here it is even simpler. If you are on a vegan diet, you could replace cheese with inactive yeast flakes. They have a distinct, intense flavour reminiscent of cheese and are easy to use with popcorn – just sprinkle them on ready-made popcorn.

Sweet popcorn with chocolate

Another type of sweet popcorn is covered with milk chocolate. To do so, melt a chocolate bar in a water bath. How should you do this? Put a glass bowl in a pot of hot water and add chocolate cubes  –  stir vigorously as they melt. When the chocolate is all liquid, pour it over the ready-made popcorn and let the mass solidify.

Paprika popcorn

Paprika popcorn owes its excellent taste and enticing colour to the addition of powdered, sweet paprika (or if you prefer more intense flavours, we recommend powdered smoked paprika or chilli pepper). Sprinkle it over freshly prepared popcorn and mix it thoroughly. You can also prepare other types of popcorn this way – just choose your favourite spices and add them to the snack. By trial and error, you will surely find some flavours that match your preferences.

Preparing different types of popcorn at home is not as difficult as it may seem – just as in the case of candy floss. So if you want to serve delicious sweet or savoury snacks for both children and adults alike, be sure to try some of the above popcorn recipes.
