Cool drinks are a must on hot summer days. And what could be more refreshing than an ice-cold slushy! If a delicious, neon-blue slushy sounds like the ultimate July thirst quencher to you too, check out our step-by-step guide to making one right here below. We’ll show you exactly what equipment and ingredients you’ll need.
What do you need to make a slushy?
Our expert Michał tested the Slush Machine RCSL3/12 from Royal Catering for you. Use it to prepare the syrupy, icy treat. It couldn’t be easier to concoct your own ice slushies:
First, prepare the basic mixture from which you will make your slushie. (It should contain roughly 13 % sugar.) To do this, thoroughly mix sugar and water (e.g., with a blender). Make sure you only use ingredients that are suitable for making ice cream in slush machines or other devices.
Once the mixture is ready, connect the unit to the mains. Now pour the mixture into the containers. Fill up to the marked line, but never go beyond the indicated quantity. As it freezes, the mixture will expand and gain volume.
Start the machine at the touch of a button. Make sure that you always have liquid in the vessel when starting, so the stirrer does not run dry. Hit the middle button to cool the containers and freeze the slushy. On the RCSL 3/12 model, prepare cold drinks using the container closest to the control panel. However, all containers are suitable for making slush ice. You can also control the hardness of the ice mixture with the same button.
Planning to keep your beverages in the device for several hours or overnight? Then set the middle button to position II. This is how you activate night mode. This keeps the ice-cold mixture in a liquid state while also preserving the lifespan of the compressor.
How long does it take for the drink to freeze?
It’s hard to give a precise answer since it depends on many factors. These include the composition of the slushy, the ingredients used, the initial temperature, and the ambient temperature. Michał used the following mixtures in his test:
- Water with a sugar content of 13 % (as indicated in the instructions) in the first container
- Special syrup in the second vessel
- And something extra-special for the grown-ups: a classic margherita in the third container

- Slush Machine – 2 x 6 litres – minimum temperature: -20 °C – ice cream function 1,349.00 €
All the containers began at a similar temperature. And the results? The sugar water mixture reached the right consistency after one hour, the slushy syrup after just an hour and ten minutes. He had to wait the longest for the margherita: about two hours. But boy, was it worth the wait!
