As the weather gets warmer, many people start looking for new ideas for spending time outdoors. Garden trampolines, both for children and adults, are a popular choice, as they let you enjoy the great outdoors with your whole family and stay in shape at the same time. So which garden trampoline should you choose? Read on and find out the most important points and aspects to keep in mind.

Types of trampolines

Our article is about garden trampolines, let’s first have a quick look at different types of trampolines in general. Although they are all used for the same purpose, i.e. jumping, there are different types. These include:

All the above-mentioned types of trampoline can be used by both children and adults.

Garden trampolines – the most important features

When choosing a trampoline for your garden, there are a few things you should pay attention to in order to buy a durable and safe product. Do you want to be able to use the trampoline for many years to come? Here’s what you should check before you choosing the one for you:

The above list covers the most important aspects to keep in mind. In addition, you could also check the shape and diameter of the garden trampoline. The bigger it is, the more people will be able to use it at the same time.

Standard trampoline diameters

There are many different sizes available on the market. Which size you choose depends primarily on the amount of space you have. In addition, the age of the children who will be using it should also play a role in your choice. Smaller trampolines will be better for younger children, e.g. for 3-year-olds a diameter of 6 feet should be enough.

Larger dimensions, on the other hand, are better if the trampoline is to be used by a few people at the same time:

However, bear in mind that each additional person means a higher total weight. Therefore, before joining a group already on the trampoline, always check the permissible load that the trampoline can withstand. And don’t forget about basic safety rules.

How can you make sure the trampoline is safe for small children?

Garden trampolines are generally great fun for children of all ages. Jumping to impressive heights is both fun and a good form of physical activity, so much needed by children in this day and age. But as in the case of any form of entertainment, you must also make sure your children are not in risk of any harm.

We already mentioned protective nets on garden trampolines. These are usually fitted in two ways – internally and externally. The first type consists of only a jumping mat, so it acts as an additional barrier between the user and the springs. The external nets are used around the entire surface of the trampoline, and will have an entrance that is opened and closed using zips, Velcro or fasteners. Pay attention to the height of the net. As a general rule, larger trampolines should have higher nets.

Another safety aspect to pay attention to are covers on sharp elements. In addition to those covering the springs, they should also be used for parts of the frame that stick out. These are more common in trampolines with nets. The covers are usually made of soft materials such as foam. Additional protection for younger children are removable ladders, letting them enter and leave the trampoline without adult supervision.

Always follow the instructions provided, which will not only inform about intended use of the equipment but also potential safety hazards.

Planning the space for your garden trampoline

Setting up a trampoline in your garden does not require any significant changes. However, you should remember about a few basic safety rules.

First of all, make sure you put it on an even surface. Any bumps or recesses could cause the frame to bend or even overturn the whole trampoline during use. Manufacturers also advise against placing trampolines on tarmac, concrete, cobbled or other hard surfaces, which would pose a potential risk for anyone that falls out of the trampoline during use. A garden lawn is the best option.

You should make sure there are no other objects around the trampoline, such as playgrounds, garden furniture, barbecues, etc. The same goes for walls, fences and pools. There should also be no objects, bushes or animals under the trampoline. Make sure there is sufficient free space above the trampoline for jumping, i.e. avoid low trees, electric wires, roofs and other hazards.

By following these tips, you will be able find the perfect location for your garden trampoline. If you are interested in more garden inspiration ideas, read our article about building a garden swimming pool.
